Heeler's (ACD) are exceptional all around dogs, extremely intelligent and very versitile. But indeed not for the meak.
They can and do make wonderful family pets as well as tough and durable working partners; and everything in between, from agility to rescue.
Heelers find it hard to back down from a challenge, and that is by design. An intentionally bred-in trait to ensure their tenacity in working rough stock; they were bred to "push back", and understanding that makes living with a heeler not only more manageable, but appreciated.
Also by design, their loyalty was a bred-in trait, and is among the highest level found in the canine world. Though loyal to a fault, it should be very well understood that an ACD needs a strong leader. If leadership is not well-established early in their socialization, they will be quite happy taking over the role. It is not out of malice, but rather their misconception of their role in the "pack" (family). They are a dog who takes their role and responsiblity seriously, and if they think that they are in charge....they will be happy to step-up-to-the-plate and take charge. This too comes out of their strong loyalty to the "family".
These traits are among the biggest drivers of an ACD's behaviours, and should be considered when selecting a heeler, and when working with them. What may be viewed as "aggression" is their bred design to "not back down" and when understood it is more easily directed and managed.
Following are a couple of sites that publish good information on the history of the breed, and we encourage anyone considering one to do your homework. We are always here as a resource, but there are several good sources of information that are well worth review.
